How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen so Kids Will Talk by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish
This book is a very practical guide to communication between parents and kids. Theory is put into practice and modified based on interactions between the researchers, parents at workshops and followup with their kids.
I have begun to use the advice in this book and it has helped. Posting signs or using small white boards is a rather simple way to communicate. The white board can be used to list activities and tasks to be completed over a weekend. The child can erase the items for a sense of accomplishment.
Another very good piece of advice is to not immediately attempt to solve a problem when a child brings it up. It is important to be a sounding board for your child and then ask their opinion about the best approach to solving the problem. This teaches a very good life skill for the child and probably yields a better solution since they understand the details of the problem better than the adult.
