A Short History of Myth by Karen Armstrong

A Short History of Myth by Karen Armstrong

The author describes the relationships of humans with God starting with the paleolithic area of hunter gatherers. She moves through the neolithic agrarian age and to the modern axial age of conflict illustrated by Martin Luther. She covers Jesus, Mohammad, Buddha and others who attempt to understand the relationship to God. I found the book to be helpful understanding the cults of the Old Testament. The book may challenge some long held beliefs.

In her 2008, speech at a TED Conference below.  Karen contends that  the center of most world religions is not belief but compassion for others.  Belief must not supplant compassion.  Compassion is not restricted to your group but to others outside of your group including enemies.  Practice the Golden Rule to others and to other nations.

The book,  A Short History of Myth (Myths, The) is available from Amazon.com
